Thinking Activity on The Waste Land

Thinking Activity on T. S. Eliot The Waste Land

Hello reader..

Here is my blog on Waste Land by T. S. Eliot this blog I am trying to answering all question given by my teacher.

"The Waste Land" Is a poem by T. S. Eliot this poem regarded as one of the most important poem of 20th century. It is published in 1922 the 434 lines.

The poem devided into 5 section:

1.The Burial of the Dead

2.A Game of Chess

3. The Fire Sermon

4.Death by Water

5.what the Thunder Said

In this poem the major idea we can see that sexual perversion of sex have always led to degeneration & decay.

1) What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzche's views? or Has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling mytho-historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

Nietzche talks about Ubermensch means Superman or Superhuman. according to him, in every decade there is/has been some people came out with strong will power, with more mental ability, more enthusiasm and became great through their revolutionary ideas among the ordinary people.

On the other side T.S Eliot talks to look backward into the past because anyhow past is connected with the present time. 'The Wasteland' by Eliot also tries to compare the myths or past incidents with contemporary time's issues.

In comparison to Neitzche's thought, yes Eliot is regressive but it doesn't mean that he only raises questions on his contemporary society, he also tries to give way of solution rather than the answers. History repeated Eliot gives the way of living modern era nowadays question we couldn't find answer in the Upanishad,Buddhism, Christinity but there are many mythical story Eliot use to give the idea of sexual perversion in the nowday around over society we easily connected that happening is already happen in history not only greek mythology but also there are many mythical story in over indian culture.

we can conclude that it is also right that problems of contemporary crisis' solution are in faith and self but, the level of faith and understanding of self must be necessary. It comes from reading mytho-historical and religious thought like one can said that ‘SHRIMAD BHAGVAD GITA’ gave all solution of life we known that nowadays modern problem it can't help but if you read this book at least you have idea of how living great life or lifestyle.

2) Prior to the speech, Gustaf Hellström of the Swedish Academy made these remarks:

What are your views regarding these comments? Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' leads us to a happy and satisfied life? or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition'?

I disagree with Eliot. By suppressing the desires or by controlling it the desire gets stronger and it also affects at psychological level.it is like a metal spring you force to push  it then it is back with more force.  It is better to give free vent to primitive instincts as Freud suggests.

3) Write about allusions to the Indian thughts in 'The Waste Land'. (Where, How and Why are the Indian thoughts referred to?)

There is an image or central theme of poem is death in life is eastern philosophy in wasteland, rebirth and the continuation pf an endless cycle of suffering in a world, and many other references are there…

1)Fire Sermon

The fire and sermon is name of sermon given by Buddha. Gayasisa is the place where buddha preaches the fire sermon about achieving liberation from suffering through detachment from the five senses and mind, by that Eliot also wants to convey a message tp stay detached from all body and sense's desire.this is also we can see in many religion in Hinduism this called ‘NIRJALA UPAVAS’ and other thing.

2) Thunder say?

There  is reference of Upanishad in this Prajapati spoke in thunder 'AKASAVANI' to devotes are pointed out the way of salvation Eliot shows the way of spiritual rebirth on the basis of wisdom of india. There are many mythical story in India based on this thunder said like KANSh, JARASAND, PANCHATANTRA, HITOPADESH etc.

"Rock and no water and the sandy road winding above among the mountains"

3) River Ganga and Himalaya

Eliot refers to wisdom of india for spiritual salvation of modern humanity holly river Ganga known as 'BHAGIRATHI' -means purity and purification or Holly work  most important in Hindu religion Himalaya is known for spiritually and peace also known as religion aspect or connection of the people like Mansarovar.

4) Three Da

Da-Give-Greed

Da-Prison/key-Cruel

Da- Damayata- Self control

Da.. Da.. Da.. As a reminder to practice self control, giving and compassion.

5) Shantih Mantra

Path of life is always painful, peace comes after seen some little hope that is real shanti Eliot end Waste Land with hope with peace.

So, according to Eliot took Indian thoughts in his poem because he believes peace and positivity of indian air or I think that positive tone in Indian spirituality.

4) Is it possible to read the Waste Land as a pandemic poem?

One author on her book Viral Modernism -Elizabeth Outka she was given connections between Eliot and diseases in his time it is Spanish Flu (read more https://drive.google.com/file/d/15GyRHefxiBhy_ZnphveVI7xJG0n8DJyA/view?usp=drivesdk

There is another reference of connection or reading Waste Land as a pandemic poem Holly river Ganga. India's holiest river, the Ganges, has been swollen with bodies in recent days.

Hundreds of corpses have been found floating in the river or buried in the sand of its banks. Those who live close to where they have washed up, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, fear they are Covid-19 victims.

India has been overwhelmed by a devastating second wave of the pandemic in recent weeks. It has recorded more than 25 million cases and 275,000 deaths, but experts say the real death toll is several times higher.

The bodies on the river banks, taken together with funeral pyres burning round-the-clock and cremation grounds running out of space, tell the story of a death toll unseen and unacknowledged in official data.(BBC News website
